Pilot Project in Strasbourg

Strasbourg, first city of Elsass at the extreme east of France, is known for its rich cultural past but also its current position as european capital. Vibrant city thanks to its international influence and numerous students, Strasbourg is appreciated for its numerous bike path and accessibility through public transportation. The city also occupies a strategic position from an ecological perspective. Its location along the Rhine, an European ecological corridor, is bringing habitats rich in biodiversity right on the city’s doorstep. The city is committed to implement practical and innovative measures for the environment by drawing on its Climate Plan. Over the last 20 years, many public policies have been created to promote not only the development of green spaces, but also their ecological qualities, involving different stakeholders. Its commitment to biodiversity has already been rewarded with the title of “French capital for biodiversity” in 2014 and “Best large city for biodiversity” in 2017 and 2023.

Strasbourg is a pilot city in the LivableCities project. Through the project, the city aims to better understand the ecological connectivity of small natural spaces and improve it in dense and complex urban environnement. More specifically, Strasbourg is contributing to Pilot Action I by creating a GIS cartography of the different deseal and planting actions, and then modelling the ecological connectivity to choose a pilot neighborhood. Existing and innovative measures from LivableCities work will be tested to improve the local ecological connectivy, as Strasbourg is co-piloting Pilot Action III with the city of Saarlouis.
