Pilot Project in Landau in der Pfalz

The city of Landau in der Pfalz (48,341 inhabitants) is a committed municipal partner in the project, contributing strong expertise in climate protection, climate adaptation and Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI). The city adopted a Climate Protection Concept (2018) and a Climate Adaptation Concept (2020), established a dedicated climate staff unit in 2023, and is a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate Municipal Climate Pact. With extensive experience in transforming former military sites into climate-adapted urban districts, Landau brings practical know-how in implementing BGI under challenging spatial conditions.

Landau plays a leading role in implementing Pilot Actions I and II:

Pilot Action I (city-level BGI network): Together with Cork and Strasbourg, Landau develops an approach for establishing a city-level BGI network. Locally, this focuses on the “Horst Climate District,” where the city will design a green network concept, implement exemplary BGI measures, and convert selected parking spaces into green infrastructure. The pilot actively involves residents and aims to generate social and psychological co-benefits.

Pilot Action II (neighbourhood-level BGI): In cooperation with Antwerp, Cork and Utrecht, Landau explores neighbourhood-scale BGI in the “Südstadt,” a former military site and urban heat island with high soil sealing and structural constraints. The pilot assesses feasible unsealing and greening solutions in dense, old-town typologies and evaluates their impacts.
